Sports alumnus takes up head coaching role

Former City of Oxford College sports student, Des Buckingham, has been named head coach of New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix FC.

Des, who studied sports and exercise science before launching his career with Oxford United, will share the role until the end of the season. He was previously goalkeeping and assistant coach for the professional club, which is based in Wellington and competes in the Australian A-league.

Des has fond memories of his time at college. He said: “College shaped my life and I know it has for others who are now close friends. It is something that always comes up when we get together. The environment, along with some very good staff, made it a great learning experience”

After graduating from City of Oxford College, Des secured a part-time role as a football coach with Activate Learning. He said: “The opportunity with Activate Learning is one of my career highlights. This progressed into a full-time role which was a very rewarding and exciting time for me at 23-years-old. I was working towards my next coaching qualifications, which the college supported me with throughout the next two years.”
