Health and safety training prepares students for careers

Students at the Technology Campus were given a thorough grounding in key health and safety good practice and legislation by Michael Flanagan from Peter Brett Associates.

The group of students were from a range of Level 1 programmes including: brickwork, plumbing, carpentry and motor vehicle. Michael ensured that the session was engaging and interactive by delivering a comprehensive presentation which featured videos demonstrating the devastating effects of accidents in the workplace and also facilitated a quiz with buzzers which added a lighter aspect to a serious topic. The session encouraged the students to think about a typical day on site in their own vocational areas and to understand the importance of health and safety in their future places of work.

Shivender Parmar, Learning Coach at Activate Learning said: “Some of the students have not yet been on a construction site and having Michael come in to college to speak with them, using real life experiences and scenarios really caught their attention. The session was incredibly relatable as the students had to envisage the potential repercussions of poor health and safety and how it could affect them and their peers. Michael and I are hoping to work together to deliver a series of workshops to enrich our students’  learning and ensure that they are prepared for the workplace.”
