City of Oxford College was delighted to host the MAKEIT! Wood and Furniture Awards 2015 on Friday 19 June.
This is the second time in one week that the Rycotewood Furniture Centre hosted an awards event to celebrate the future furniture making stars of tomorrow.
This time it was the turn of local school children who submitted designs and finished furniture pieces to a panel of judges for consideration.
The awards were created by Proskills UK Group and are designed to inspire young people into the furniture industry.
The project asks students to research and design a product, identifying the type of raw materials used, considering sustainable design and investigating production processes as well as showing their understanding of environmental issues.
Jonathan Ledger, CEO Proskills UK Group commented: “We are very grateful to Rycotewood Furniture Centre and City of Oxford College for supporting this event. I’m blown away by the high quality work the students are producing and for me this demonstrates the opportunities open to young people in furniture apprenticeships.”
Many of the former winners of the MAKEIT! Wood and Furniture Awards have gone on to study furniture making programmes at City of Oxford College.
